Color Photography
Mario Castillo first started to take color photos as a young man, but it was not until his arrival at Cal Arts that he first learned to develop and print his own color photos. He found out that this process was something he did not want to do. Because of this he primarily dedicated his time to producing color slides. Thus he started to create a bank of imagery. Castillo's color transparency archives contain thousands of images from all over.
Because he did not like the process of printing his own color prints, he had professional studios print them for him. After getting them printed he would crop them and mount them as they were or paint over them.
Mario Castillo would like to publish Color Photography portfolios of some of his favorite photographs. He has photo series on certain subjects, such as nature, buildings, landscapes, plants, desert, sky and clouds, people, mountains, Spanish missions, and a whole series of other themes. Many of these topics revolve around the exploration of his heritage, the Mexican culture, the family, and the psychology of friendship.
